“I define empathy as the ability to put yourself in somebody else’s shoes and to understand and connect with what they are feeling - to feel what they’re feeling. You first have to understand the world as they see it through their eyes.”

Good listeners listen to what people say, and great listeners notice what people donâ€™t say. When you know the neuroscience of listening, you realize that people can think up to nine times faster than they can speak. So the first thing they say is probably between ten and fourteen percent of what they are thinking.

â€œPeople who have some sense of connectedness to something bigger than themselves are grateful.â€

"Where purpose really takes hold is when it's part of a real belief system, a system of values, a real point of view, a world view where there's a real vision for how the world should be."

â€œManagers are appointed but leaders are elected. You choose the person you want to follow. Youâ€™re told who your manager is but in terms of the people you want to emulate and admire, thatâ€™s all choice.â€

Trust, at its core, is built when you make and keep good promises. And we describe the ability to make good promises as having high humanity and transparency. And the ability to keep those promises we define as capability and reliability. Those are the four factors of trust.

â€œWhen you want to help people change, youâ€™ve got to uncover their motivations, their drivers, then uncover the situation/impact, and figure out if itâ€™s big enough, strong enough that theyâ€™re willing to change who they are to change the outcome.â€

â€œEverybody in one way or another struggles with, looks forward to, is challenged by discovering who they are.â€

Mindfulness is basically focus - that I can focus on what I choose to focus on and not everything else. And focus is so powerful in business. Our ability to focus on what we want, to me, does create business results. So, I see it to be totally compatible with business.

"People mostly have the answer within them. The job of the leader is to help them find these answers."
